Dr. Raychelle Burks is an analytical chemist at St. Edwards University who develops new forensic methods for detecting drugs and explosives. She’s an active science communicator on social media, podcasts, and other popular media including the Science Channel’s Outrageous Acts of Science. Burks will discuss her successful approaches for bringing science to new audiences and how she has managed challenges along the way.

Robert J. Higgins Welcome Center Ribbon-Cutting and Open House
The Robert J. Higgins Welcome Center, named in honor of the late Robert J. Higgins ’67, Hon. ’00, will be the new gateway to the Kingston Campus for its more than 50,000 annual visitors. The new 11,000-square-foot venue tells the story of URI through a history wall and features digital screens giving visitors a peek at campus events, student life, academic programs, and alumni success.

Dynamic Lecturing with Engaged Learning: Strategies to Enhance Teaching Effectiveness
Although there have been many calls to eliminate the lecture, there is actually no research to support that position. That said, the research clearly and consistently indicates that learning is hindered when a faculty member lectures all of the time, or lectures poorly. It is time to shift the focus from eliminating lectures to looking for integrated teaching strategies that lead to deep learning by our students. In this session, we will discuss foundational studies regarding active learning, examine components of the effective lecture, and identify new ways to integrate lectures with engaged learning strategies to create meaningful experiences for our students.

Where did you learn how to learn and how to study? It is an odd question, as you have been learning your entire life, and since you’re in college, you’re clearly pretty good at academic learning. That said, what if the strategies you use to study are not the most effective ways to learn? This session is not about spending more time studying, but rather how to study and learn better. The overall goal of this session is for you to better understand how your brain works when processing information and for you
to learn specific strategies you can employ to become a more effective learner.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Capstone Presentation
Civil and Environmental Engineering Capstone Presentations Civil and Environmental Engineering seniors will be presenting their designs for the Citizens Bank campus. A total of four teams whose members include specialists in environmental, site drainage design, geotechnical and structural engineering will present their designs to a panel of judges consisting of faculty and outside consulting engineers. Each of the teams has been assigned a mentor Rhode Island consulting firm to ensure that their designs reflect best engineering practices. Each team’s presentation will last for 30 minutes.

Risica Lecture This year’s lecture by Dr. Elham (Ellie) Fini and Dr. Mahour Parast will feature the technical developments and commercial path for a bio-adhesive technology invented by Dr. Fini at NC A&T State University, which was further commercialized through a spin-off company, Bio-Adhesive Alliance, Inc. A question and answer session and refreshments will follow the lecture.
